Mac OS 9’s Software Update control panel software notes that there’s a new version of Mac OS Runtime for Java in distribution. The new version, 2.2.5, can be downloaded and installed through the control panel. As MacCentral went to press with this article, a separate installer was not available through download on Apple’s Software Downloads Web site.

Mac OS Runtime for Java (MRJ) provides Mac users with the ability to run applets and full applications written in Java. The current implementation of MRJ, 2.2.x, is compatible with Sun’s Java development kit version 1.1.8.
Apple notes that the new version of MRJ is an update that addresses several problems affecting caching, network behavior, and users of 2-byte international systems. The software is Gold Certified for use with Oracle Applications 11.5.3 when used with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 to access the client.

The Read Me file included with the software notes several issues — users of FAXstf software (included with some Mac bundles) may experience crashes when clicking in the menu bar while running Java apps. Users experiencing those problems are instructed to turn off FAXstf when using Java applications. Users of Multiple User and Macintosh Manager should allow owners and authorized network administrators to install the software — the Read Me file indicates that the MRJ installer will not run in multi-user mode or from a Macintosh Manager client.
