And, amazingly, Apple let it into the App Store. You can download iSH right now and it’s free. Based on the Alpine Linus, this release of iSH is the first time a full Linux shell has been ported to the iPhone or iPad.
Toon Boom Animation and FableVision have teamed up to create Animation-Ish, a new application for Mac OS X and Windows. It costs $59.95.
Animation-Ish is aimed at kids and “grown up kids” interested in computer-based animation. Featuring more than 50 video clips of FableVision founder and CEO Peter Reynolds—who also is a published children’s book author and illustrator—Animation-Ish helps users understand the basic techniques of animation.
The software features three different animation skill levels, and includes a “Project Vault” that includes Reynolds’ drawings and starter ideas. A “Share” feature lets you export your animations into multiple formats.
Animation-Ish is also aimed at the classroom, with special educational pricing and 24 lessons written by teachers for teachers. Additional teacher content is available online, and more tutorials from Reynolds and other FableVision animators is available online, as well.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4 or later, G5 or Intel, 256MB RAM, 120MB hard disk space.

Have you ever wished you had a Linux command line on your iPad or iPhone? With ISH, you get pretty close to reaching your goal. iSH Shell is a Linux shell for the iOS operating system that uses an x86 emulator to run a simplified version of Alpine Linux on an iPad or iPhone. You can even install packages and additional software directly on iSH using Alpine Package Manager, which provides access to a world of command-line tools such as wget, curl, python, git, and more.
Installing ISH Shell on iOS is fairly easy, but requires TestFlight, which is a developer tool. Therefore, this is mostly fun and work done by advanced users. If that’s not obvious, iSH isn’t a full version of Linux with a window manager and interface like Ubuntu for iPad or iPhone, it’s just a shell, but it’s by far the most functional local command line environment on iOS currently available. And it’s definitely time to have fun playing!
How to install iSH Linux Shell on iPad or iPhone
The easiest way to install iSH is TestFlight, but you can also download the app from page * if you want that route:
- Click here to install TestFlight from the App Store on your iPad or iPhone
- On the iPad or iPhone, click the following link: https://testflight.apple.com/join/97i7KM8O
- Start testing and accept the TestFlight terms
- In TestFlight, click Install. Install the iSH Shell app on iOS
- Start iSH when you are done
iSH is installed on your iPhone or iPad like any other app, and you can open and close it just like any other iOS app.
When you open iSH, you are in a fairly typical linux command line and the typical command area ls, mkdir, cd, cat, touch, vi, wget, zip, unzip, tar, chmod, grep, chown, rm, and more are available to you.
Because iSH provides a command line environment, you write a lot. Typing on the touchscreen keyboard is exactly what you’d expect from the typical awkward experience of typing on the touchscreen, so if you’re trying to use this seriously, you might want to use an external keyboard with your iOS device.
* If you want to install iSH without TestFlight, you can do so. Instead, download the iSH source from github, and then follow the instructions to download the apps to iOS using iSH source. The page load process requires a Mac and Xcode.
How to install packages on iSH in iOS using apk
You can install new software on iSH using the ‘apk’ for Alpine linux package management.
For example, to add a lynx to iSH, the following command:
apk more lynx
You can then run the lynx to visit your favorite site as usual:
lynx bollyinside.com
Or if you want to add python:
apk adds python
You can add almost anything with APK, even if not everything works (for example, zsh doesn’t work at the moment, nor does telnet)
You can upgrade packages in the following ways:
apk update package name
You can also search for a package by name:
apk search name
And of course you can also remove packages:
apk del packagename

Updating ISH
Note that the iSH Shell needs to be upgraded from TestFlight instead of the App Store.
This is because some of the features iSH offers are apparently not allowed in the App Store, but maybe it will change along the way.
The developer updates iSH quite often, so just open the TestFlight app and install all available updates when they are displayed on the iSH Shell.
We mostly show iSH here on iPad screenshots, but it works exactly the same way on the iPhone, only with a much smaller screen space.
If all of this feels too complicated or you don’t want to use TestFlight or download anything from the page, you can try an app allowed in the App Store called OpenTerm, OpenTerm gives you a kind of command line on iOS, but it’s much more limited.
Maybe one day we’ll even get the official Terminal app on iOS, like on a Mac? Until then, try iSH, or you can just get an ssh client and connect to your own shell elsewhere.
